Hello and welcome to WKNC Sport podcast in the den. Today we'll be going over the spring sports for the 2024 2025 school year, including softball, men's women's tennis, and men's and women's golf,
Logan Brumley 0:15
As of recording baseball, track and field and Marie Madsen individual NC double a Women's Golf Championship are currently ongoing. Those will be discussed in a future episode, but until then, let's go over what we have. Shall we
Logan Brumley 0:32
start with women's and men's golf?
Logan Brumley 0:35
This week, Marie Madsen will compete in the women's golf NC double A individual championship. However, the team will miss the NC double A tournaments after not making the cut in the Charlottesville regional.
Logan Brumley 0:47
They needed to finish above plus 17, but finished plus 24 which you know, in golf, the higher you numbered, the worse it is. However, they will finish 44th ranked in the nation, and have won 95 event, 95 individual matches in 11 offense.
Logan Brumley 1:07
The most notable women's golf athletes are as mentioned, Marie Madsen, with two wins and two top four and no four top three finishes in 11 defense. And Laura Olivieris, the senior, who has one win and one top three finish in 11 events. It was a really good, hard fought season for this women's golf team, and with Marie Madsen as the freshman leading the helm, the future is only going to get brighter for the women's golf
Logan Brumley 1:36
but how about the men's? The men's will not be competing in the NC double A tournament after finishing 12th in the conference, Nick Matthews, a graduate student, is the only NCSU golf player to finish top 100 in the individual rankings. He finishes with one win and three top three finishes and 10 offense. Regardless, they are ranked 64th in the nation, which is a very rough streak for our men's golf. So hopefully we can get some good guys to come in and help change this
Logan Brumley 2:08
team around. But they are not the worst in the ACC, which is, you know, that kind of weird bright spot with everything
Logan Brumley 2:18
up next is tennis,
Logan Brumley 2:21
women's, men's and women's tennis both came really close to wind, and with both teams losing the sweet 16, the men's would lose to Columbia University, and the individual was Brandon Schick, a senior loses in around a 32 to UCLA Spencer Johnson, Lucas Daeheli, a junior loses round of 32 to TCU Louis Maxted and Martin Bourisorick. I'm sorry if I mispronounced our last name. There's so a lot of hard last names to pronounce. He's a senior, and he lost in around a 64 to Baylor's Devin Badenhorst. No men's doubles team would compete in the national tournaments. Aforementioned tennis players finished top 100 in men's individuals, with all of them winning more than 60% of their games, with salehely winning 79%
Logan Brumley 3:18
an honorable mention goes to Joe LaRioux with 80% wins as a freshman.
Logan Brumley 3:26
However, for women's the their tennis team will loosen sweet 16 to the dreaded UNC, no women's singles will qualify for the NC double a women's tennis tournament, but Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddie Zampardo did qualify, but lost in the quarterfinals to UCLA as a doubles the women's tennis finished 11th in the nation with four athletes finishing top 100 in the women's individuals, Michelle a lackey freshman, and Anna, Sarah Nova junior, and then after mentioned Maddie Sam Pardo, gabbia,
Logan Brumley 4:05
soskus and Gabrielle Bradford, Mia Selma were tied for 100 and 10th
Logan Brumley 4:12
some. Pardo and Broadfoot were seventh highest ranked duo in the nation. So there's a lot of close finishes for our women's and men's tennis groups, but the future is still looking bright, because, I mean, there is a lot of down they can go, but they can go up, especially since
Logan Brumley 4:35
all of the women's tennis players are likely to stay. Even though the transfer portal for tennis is not as public information, just because not as many people are looking at it, having two strong freshmen for the women's
Logan Brumley 4:54
is really helpful, even though for the men's, there are two seniors who are soon to leave and.
Logan Brumley 5:00
One junior who could make a big splash next year.
Logan Brumley 5:04
You know, good luck to them next year. The last sport that I will briefly mention is the softball team, who took a step back only winning 25 years compared to 30 last year, they had some pitch and struggles with their highest team era coming from sophomore carway Maxon with 3.91 and
Logan Brumley 5:27
we thought the Oreos pitching was bad.
Logan Brumley 5:30
However, NC State did have some good hitters with senior Taylor Ensley, Junior Hanna church and freshman Kendall simmers, all hitting above 300
Logan Brumley 5:40
and with double digit home runs overall, there is a lot of bright spots when it comes to the hitting on this team, and the team is relatively young, with about five of their start nine in the future having been freshmen this year. A strong transfer portal will be helpful. However, as long as NC State softball can focus on the small fit threes and just get better at pitching consistently and at
Logan Brumley 6:09
getting the
Logan Brumley 6:11
later parts of the bat and orders hitting stronger then they could have a really good season next year, and that's all we'll be reviewing for spring Sports. Best of luck to the men's baseball team in Auburn regionals and to whoever is playing in track and field.
Logan Brumley 6:29
And now we'll be going over. Will Wade's journey to NC State and how he can provide for NC State men's basketball program.
Logan Brumley 6:38
Turns out NC State can't be one of the schools I take from smaller schools as well. Wade will be moving over from Mickey state to NC State. He has a lot of experience in the ACC having played at Clemson and was a graduate assistant under both coaches, Larry Shyatt and Oliver Pernell. He learned most from Oliver Pernell, who has this reputation of being a program builder all across the Northeast, with Clemson, Radford de Paul Dayton and Old Dominion universities having seen big changes from before and after pronounced arrival, he took that talent and Brought it to UT Chattanooga, helping them get their first 21 season as a college basketball program. After a few years there, he would go over to VCU with Shaka smart and would maintain that level of success until his LSU stint,
Logan Brumley 7:37
one particular year that really put him on the map was at 2018, 2019, dominant season, having broke LSU record win streak and individual wins for the men's college basketball programs, having NBA players, Naz Reed, Trenton, Watford, Javante, smart and discover me on the roster, the team would dominate their way to a sweet 16 loss.
Logan Brumley 8:02
However, there has been recruitment violations put against will Wade after an FBI wire type of him offering Javante smart an offer via a third party,
Logan Brumley 8:14
with a large scale investigation being made into six major schools, including NC State, for recruitment violations. The full extent is unknown, as is under a bunch of bureaucratic red tape,
Logan Brumley 8:28
but similar recruitment violations have been reported to happen within the football program, and Dave Dover,
Logan Brumley 8:35
well, Wade would eventually be suspended by both LSU and McNeese State for a certain amount of games, as more information came came out. However, these recruitment violations are now moot because of an IL where players can and are usually offered based on money.
Logan Brumley 8:57
However, his McNeese reign was kind of when he put himself back on the map after those recruitment violations, with two seasons lead into two NC double A tournament bids and Southland championships.
Logan Brumley 9:10
So based on that, purely based on being able to turn around a conference will Wade has a strong advantage for this team.
Logan Brumley 9:19
He's also been able to build those roster
Logan Brumley 9:23
very well through the transfer portal. He almost got PJ hacker the Memphis point guard, but it seems like PJ Haggerty will be going to the NBA Draft. However, he recently was able to get Darrion Williams, the power forward from Texas Tech, who's known to be a versatile do it all wing who was second on his team in both points, deals, rebounds and assists. He will be key to spacing for NC State. Trey Holman, Michigan State, six man who didn't scream efficiency, but he was second in exists and he is a great rim scorer.
Logan Brumley 10:01
Another important mention will be Terrence Acreaux of Houston, who is also another versatile two way player with starting potential as a sophomore, he has a good spot up shot and ball screen efficiency, and can also create turnovers on defense.
Logan Brumley 10:18
Two McNeese State players came with him to NC State, Alyn breed from McNeese, from of course, he's from McNeese. He only played two years, but hasn't consistently started since 2022 2022 season with providence. So there's not a lot of footage on him, and we don't really know where his fit is going to be. But assuming that will Wade wants him, the fit will be good. Another one is Quadir Copeland, who led McNeese and assists, is an aggressive score at the rim, which is important for a will Wade offense, and is also turnover Pro, which is a big thing with Trey, Holman, Cody or Copeland, that will be a problem with this NC State rosters turnovers, especially since there's not a lot of great far out shooting outside of the two players I'm going to mention next, Jerry dang who will likely play a powerful position out of who came from FSU, who is a great three point shooter and has the size to be a strong backup power forward center for this NC State roster. And Colt Langton, a sophomore who was born and raised in Raleigh, and from the fairy little footage I could find of him because he was a backup for a lot of his true freshman year. He does have a good jumper and is able to use the size well to attack the rim and get rebounds. Bucha work on being consistent in that field,
Logan Brumley 11:58
some newcomers from the recruiting portal, or at least the notable ones in our top 150 prospects, Matt able, four star player, who is a great scorer from the mid range and jumper and has just enough to produce well on defense and a skilled dribbling and carrying the Ball in both hands. Zymickeal Wilkins is just a big bodied center who is great ball handler, a passer entered your score, but is not good in traffic, but is really good in space, which is also a key part of that NC State's defense, not as helpful in offense, but that is to be seen.
Logan Brumley 12:44
Excuse
Logan Brumley 12:47
me. Um likely starting five from my guess point guard with your Copeland shooting guard, Paul McNeil, shooting forward, Matt Abel power four, Darion Williams, center, Brandon Hatley, Hunt field
Logan Brumley 12:59
with Dontrez Styles, being the sixth man over Trey Holloman,
Logan Brumley 13:06
with some quality guards NC State can push into transition, rather than settling at half court, which will open up the offense for the whole court, rather than just Kevin Keats half court. That did work for a while when we had the guys like
Logan Brumley 13:20
playing on his name last year against Duke Brian burns Jr.
Logan Brumley 13:27
There will be a lot of tech and a REM use in some place that involves either driving the ball or floating it to the center, sometimes even kicking it out. Two scores and a fast, efficient and aggressive screen defense will also be important to force and turnovers to just get back on offense and create efficient scoring. You
Logan Brumley 13:50
can see it in a lot of his big his two biggest wins would be against Clemson last year, and he and last season and NC double a first round and in 2019 against Kentucky, where this style of offense was used often with quite dear Copeland and Javante smart carrying the ball at the beginning of the session a majority of the time. And usually there will be the shuffle on random players, but the attempted scoring will be whoever is. It's usually the one. If I'm looking at the basketball goal from where I'm standing, it's usually the player from the left who will come in and will point guard, will set the screen, pass the ball to the other player, and they will start to drive down. In that case, that would just depend on how the other players have been able to shuffle around the players. If the interior is packed, the ball will get kicked out to one of the shooters. But if not, then that player will usually go in and try to get the layup. It's effective. And how there's, you know, multiple options, and as long as we have good interior scores, which we should have with the majority of these transfer.
Logan Brumley 15:00
Is having a focal point in interior scoring, it will be something that can be really hard to stop coming up next year.
Logan Brumley 15:09
I've kind of gotten a small look at next year schedule,
Logan Brumley 15:14
or at least the teams will be playing in a location as the team would be going to and I think the team would definitely make a step up. I can see I'm getting
Logan Brumley 15:24
10 to 12 wins in the conference next year, which is obviously a step up from this year, and a step up from them being the 11 seed before.
Logan Brumley 15:35
My only worries is hopefully that he won't leave us for an SEC program, which is likely, since you just kind of tasted that SEC glory, not even five years ago, well, more like six, seven years ago.
Logan Brumley 15:53
But that's all I have to say for today's episode. I hope you enjoyed listening. Um, if you, if the audience kind of wants a more in depth analysis of will Wade's coaching footage. I can if it, I could try to do that for a blog or a video for WKNC as well. But until then, hope you enjoyed listening listen to the other WKNC podcasts. Have a good day and go pack.
